Australia has announced the occupation ceiling for the 2019-2020 immigration program year. Occupational ceilings make sure that a small number of occupations do not dominate the Skilled Migration Program.
Every year, thousands of immigrants apply for Australia’s GSM Program based on the occupations on the SOL. The Dept. of Home Affairs regularly updates the SOL. Currently, there are more than 200 occupations on the SOL.
However, every occupation group on the SOL can only have a limited number of invitations issued. This limit is called the occupational ceiling. Once an occupation reaches the occupational ceiling, no more invites for the same are issued for that program year.
Occupation ceiling, however, should never be mistaken for the number of visa places on offer. Migration experts say that occupational ceiling gives you an insight as to which occupations are in-demand in Australia. Some occupations tend to have a higher occupational ceiling as compared to others.
For the year 2019-2020, the occupational ceiling for Nurses is more than 17,000. The occupational ceiling is nearly 8,000 for occupations such as Secondary School Teachers, Electricians, Software Programmers and Carpenters.
In contrast, occupations like Economists, Music professionals and Cartographers have a low occupational ceiling of 1000.
The occupational ceiling shows which occupations are high in demand and need more migrants in the country, as per SBS News.
Occupational ceilings do not apply to the below categories:
State and Territory Nominated Programs
Business Innovation and Investment Programs
